Chapter 1: The Sweet Escape
On a quiet night, Julia sat at her desk, gazing out the window with a steaming cup of chai latte in hand. Her eyes drifted over the manuscript of her latest romance novel. With a decisive click, she sent the manuscript off to her editor. Swinging one foot on the edge of her chair, she glanced at the scenery outside.
A ping from her laptop drew her attention back. She hoped it was a reply from her editor, but it was an email from her manager, Graham. He had been trying to persuade her to attend her book launch and meet her eager readers. Julia sighed, recognizing yet another email from Graham about a reading event for her last book. She ignored it, knowing its contents all too well.
Clearing her screen, she opened a search tab. The cursor blinked, awaiting her input, but Julia's mind was blank. She had been contemplating doing something different. Finally, she typed in "great travel destinations," and among the results, Thailand caught her eye. An article described Thailand's tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, and ornate temples. It seemed like the perfect place to explore and write.
Intrigued, Julia researched Thailand's attractions and culture. She fantasized about writing in a new setting, far from her routine and Graham's persistent emails. Captivated by Thailand's allure, she jotted down some travel plans, just in case.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Surprised, Julia checked the clock—7:47 pm. She hadn't ordered any food. Hoping it was a mistake, she paused, but the bell rang again. Slowly, she walked to the door and peeked through the peephole. There stood Graham.
"Julia, I know you're there. Open up," he called.
Reluctantly, Julia opened the door. Graham, a tall man with a black beard, leaned against the door frame, biting his bottom lip. He walked past her, muttering, "What am I going to do with you, Julia? Have you even read my emails?"
"I was just about to email you. I sent the final manuscript," Julia quickly replied.
"Great, but that's not what I meant," Graham interrupted.
Julia sank into her luxurious couch, clutching a pillow. She stared at Graham with her beautiful grey eyes, hoping to soften him.
"Julia, you can't keep avoiding this. Your readers are eager to meet you. Why do you avoid interacting with them?" Graham asked.
"I don't like crowds, and I don't want to answer questions," Julia replied, tilting her head and avoiding eye contact.
Graham noticed her laptop screen displaying images of Thailand. Sensing an opportunity, Julia stood up and said, "I can't do the book reading event because I'm going on vacation. I just finished my book and need a break."
Graham, sceptical, replied, "Julia, you haven't left your apartment in months. You never take time away from writing. Please, just do a book signing."
"I can't. I've already made travel arrangements, and I'm leaving the day after tomorrow," Julia insisted.
Graham, frustrated, said, "Fine. If you're really going, I want to see it to believe it. Promise me you'll attend the next book launch when you return, and I'll let you go on this trip."
Desperate to end the conversation, Julia agreed.
"And I know you haven't booked your flight yet, so I'll have your assistant handle it. Just promise you'll do the launch," Graham added.
"Okay, okay. I promise," Julia replied.
As Graham left, he called out, "Thirty days, Julia. Be back for the launch."
The door closed, and Julia collapsed onto the couch, relieved.
Julia, while lying on the couch, realized she needed to make travel arrangements. Excitedly, she jumped up and ran to her laptop to search for vacation options in Bangkok for a month. She looked for an apartment in the Sukhumvit area, which seemed popular and where English was widely spoken. She also checked the requirements for travel documents, including an international driver’s permit.
After compiling her list of travel arrangements and plans, she emailed her assistant all the details and accommodation requests. Exhausted, she fell asleep on the couch.
Julia woke up to her phone ringing. Groggily, she searched for it, finally finding it on the floor under the coffee table. "Hello!" she mumbled.
"Good morning, Miss Red. I've made all the arrangements. You just need to collect your travel documents from the public office. Please bring your ID and passport. Your appointment is at 3 PM," her assistant advised.
"So, you got everything I emailed you last night, including the accommodation and car rental?" Julia asked, shaking her leg impatiently.
"Yes, it was quite easy since there was an opening at the residence you requested, and everything else went smoothly," the assistant confirmed.
"And when exactly am I leaving?" Julia asked anxiously.
"Tomorrow morning, at 10:45 AM. It’s a first-class ticket to Bangkok, courtesy of Mr. Graham. I’ve emailed you the flight details; you just need to print the ticket at the airport check-in desk. Oh, and Mr Graham asked me to remind you about the deal you made with him," the assistant informed her.
"Thank you, Kim. I really appreciate it," Julia replied, ending the call.
She checked her phone for the flight details while walking to the kitchen to make some coffee. Everything seemed to be in order. Sipping her coffee, she headed to her room to find her suitcase and start packing.
